![]() And so that ends suddenly gets into, wow, we started off in something that felt surreal, but real with 1960s, New Orleans and talking about desegregation and talking about like real court cases that actually happened to kind of let you know, hey, this is our world. ![]() And, you know, for me, as I'm writing, a lot of it is about a certain kind of contrast like where we start in the past and then we go to the future and that really tells a story and it's not even the present. It's so much more driven by just what's right for the story. Mattson: I think once Lee made the decision to change styles, I kind of had to put that out of my mind when I'm writing and go, he might have come up with 100, I'm actually not sure what the full what the full amount is. How many different time periods did you guys brainstorm? How did you guys decide which ones to land on? The first issue of A Vicious Circle kicks off in the 1960s but quickly changes eras and each one has its own art style. And that, to me was a sign that that was going to be that was going to be the way to go. Like, I remember in that moment, I got so excited. I remember the moment he talked about this high concept, I was like: That's it. But like, you know, it's really evolved organically, and he pitched two or three high concepts. Mattson obviously is a big, big comic book fan. Lee: Well, we started talking because I think Jim Lee had posted a link talking about Mattson and, and I was watching him post all these, if you follow his Instagram posts, stills for movies, and they are tastefully selected from great movies, and sounds like wow, we have a lot of the same tastes we like the same movies, but also just like the selection of images, I was like, this is someone who clearly has a visual grasp, you know, and so when we started talking, I think I remember saying like, "Hey, have you ever thought about doing comics before?" What's it like creating an original time-travel action thriller with A Vicious Circle? Any particular movies or books that serve as key inspirations? But also it's like, we hang, so all of that is just kind of great to enjoy. So also just being able to have this really great friendship there's been this fruitful, creative collaboration. And so we're a month shy of three years, and in the course of that time- I mean, he's one of my best friends. ![]() And then, you know, Lee and I have been working on this book for a long time, we started talking about it at the beginning of 2020. And with both of them, there's been a really fruitful collaboration where the work that we are doing is really satisfying. ![]() Both of these artists have made me look very, very good in different, very different ways. Mattson: I feel extremely, extremely lucky. So you're going from working with Andrea Sorrentino on Batman: Imposter and now you're working with Lee, checking off two of the greatest comic artists of all time.
